Discourse template for continuing research on a hazardous technology X

A template for a thesis statement on the continued study of a particular dangerous technology X. (A discourse that fits this template can be found in Eric Drechsler's article. In his exposition, X = molecular nanotechnology.)

  1. the risks of X are high.
  2. reducing the risk of X requires a period of time used for careful preparation.
  3. the preparatory phase will only begin when the possible prospects of X are widely appreciated by society.
  4. the possible prospects of X will only be widely appreciated by society when a substantial amount of research devoted to the development of X has been carried out.
  5. The earlier substantive research begins, the longer it takes to realise X (because of the low level of enhancement technology available at the start).
  6. Therefore, the earlier substantive research begins, the longer it takes to prepare seriously and the greater the reduction in risk.
  7. Substantial research dedicated to R&D X should therefore be initiated immediately.
